Iran Earthquake Victims Face Winter In Tents

Dear IACS Friends,

Relief efforts in East Azerbaijan province have gained new urgency for the people still displaced by the August earthquakes as the temperature drops and heavy rains have begun to flood valleys. With winter approaching, a shortage of blankets, medical care, and shelter for villagers' livestock were cited as looming problems.

Losing their loved ones and homes was a heavy blow, now the quake victims are left wondering how to survive the freezing winter cold in the mountainous region.

As you might know, IACS has a long history for helping victims of earthquake disasters in past ten years in Iran. The assistance to the victims happened either by IACS alone or by joint efforts of 16 other organizations. Now, again considering what has taken place in Azerbaijan and all those families in desperate need for help, we need your financial help as before.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control had issued Iranian General License C, which authorizes, U.S.- based non-governmental organizations to raise funds for a limited period of time and send those funds to Iran. The U.S. Treasury Department has extended the sanctions waiver to help enable ongoing earthquake relief efforts in northern Iran, and calls for additional steps to ensure sanctions do not continue to block transactions of food and medicine. The earthquake relief waiver now applies until November 19, 2012. IACS will collaborate with other trusted organizations with OFAC license for distribution of the raised fund in the disaster area.
